we had no rules at the beginning

we were on fire, back then

six months on they swept through

killing bright lights we’d lit

unwritten, unspoken, unassuming

as insurance against loss

for what was newly acquired

a brittle structure, climbing upwards

sky-scraper high

primed to collapse

from the pressure of a hand

gently rested

on the handle of a closing door
